Home Minister Amit Shah said Waqf Boards in India owned 18 lakh acres of land from 1913 to 2013 (100 years). However, this increased by 21 lakh acres in last 12 years (2013-2025), bringing the total to 39 lakh acres, Shah said. He said 20,000 properties were originally recorded as leased, but in 2025 none of these are leased properties.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi tore off copy of Waqf (Amendment) Bill to oppose the amendment during the Lok Sabha debate on Wednesday. "This Bill is an attack on Muslims. My mosques, my Dargahs, my Madrasas are on target," Owaisi said. Notably, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified earlier that Bill doesn't aim to "snatch" the land or mosques of Muslim community.

The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill with 288 votes in its favour and 232 votes against it, after a discussion that lasted over ten hours. The changed bill said that at least two non-Muslims should be part of Waqf Boards. During the debate, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said even the Parliament building was being claimed as Waqf property.

BJP MP Sambit Patra, while speaking in Lok Sabha on the Waqf Bill, said Indian Railways, Indian Army and the Waqf Board are the three biggest landowners in India. "But I doubt this. The third-biggest landowner is the board of a 'parivaar (family)'," Patra said while referring to Congress' Gandhi family. "They should be alarmed, not us," he added.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said a person can donate something that belongs to them and not someone else's property. He was speaking on the Waqf Amendment Bill and said the bill is meant to protect properties. "You can only donate private, personal property and not the land of the community (village)...This bill will bring transparency," he explained.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Addressing the House, he said, "The most draconian provision in the Act was Section 40, under which the Waqf Board could declare any land Waqf property. But we've removed that provision." While Home Minister Amit Shah was speaking in Lok Sabha on Tuesday on the Waqf Bill, TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee asked, "Why don’t you say you’ll get more seats than TMC." Responding to him, Shah said, "I will come to Bengal and say. Parliament is not a Political Battlefield. By thumping my chest, I'll say...we'll get more seats than you."

During a discussion in Lok Sabha on the Waqf Amendment Bill, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticised a lawmaker who said minorities won't accept the law. "Whom are you trying to threaten...Everyone will have to accept the law passed in the Parliament," Shah said. The Home Minister also asked how anyone can say they won't follow India's laws.
